Southeast Easter Shootout Scout Notes

John Davis (2025, Tifton, Ga.) is a highly-ranked left-handed pitcher and outfielder in the class nationally and proved why this weekend in Atlanta as the 5-foot-9, 140-pound ballplayer hit an astronomical .714 over the abbreviated holiday slate. Davis has projectable size to his young frame and had the hit tool working all weekend as he was the straw that stirred the drink for 5 Star National 14u Haynes from the leadoff spot during their championship run. At the plate, Davis has good balance and rhythm from the left side. He has a top-of-the-lineup approach and remains very patient, hunting fastballs in which he can stay behind and shoot hard-hit contact, more often than not, to the pull-side gap. A big takeaway from Davis’ game this past weekend was even though he was 5 Star’s leadoff hitter, he was more than capable in RBI situations, as he capitalized time and again. Davis drove in four runs while using his speed on the bases to score six of his own. To advance into scoring position, Davis swiped six bases over three games as well. He has good feel and aggression in all phases, and first-step quickness on the bases and in the outfield which gives him noticeable range on hard-hit contact to the gaps. This past weekend was Davis’ first tournament of 2021, and his hot start earned him MVP honors in the 14u bracket, something we hope jumpstarts his tournament season in a positive direction.
