Royals Scout Team Cruises to Tournament Championship

MARION, Iowa – What can only be looked at as a dominant weekend at Prospect Meadows for the Royals Scout Team was capped off with a championship victory at the 15U Midwest World Series on Monday. The Kansas City group finished 7-0, putting the exclamation point on things with a 5-0 win over a good Cangelosi Sparks 2023 Black team.

Jackson Downing was dominant in the championship win, tossing five scoreless inning and punching out five batters. The righty ran the fastball up to 82 mph, scattering a pair of hits and showing some feel for an upper 60's curveball as well.

Offensively, the Royals Scout Team was led in the championship game from two-way prospect Tate McGuire. McGuire was 2 for 3, scoring a run and driving a double. Five different players had RBI’s in the game, which is nothing new for an offense that certainly spread the offensive wealth throughout the tournament.

Not unique to the 15U Midwest World Series yet a hard task was the need for three wins on the final day to capture the title, and the Royals Scout Team got a plethora of pitching performances from players that can contribute on both sides of the ball.

“I’m really proud of the way these guys have worked hard all summer,” said head coach Chris Schnurbusch. “They kept the same approach this weekend as two months ago when maybe things weren’t going so well, so it is a huge credit to them for working hard and doing what they needed to do.”

While the pitchers stepped up and held the opposition to low run totals throughout the event, Schnurbusch was really pleased with his team’s ability to come through in big spots offensively.

“I don’t know exactly how many we got, but I know that we definitely continued to out-hit the other team with two outs. When you get a two-out rally going it can be heart break city for the other team, a real back breaker.”

The MV-Pitcher of the event was righthander Colton Wemhoff. Wemhoff tossed six shutout innings for the Royals Scout Team, striking out five and allowing just two hits.

The MVP of the tournament was the Cangelosi Sparks 2023 Black leadoff hitter Krew Bond. Bond pulled off one of the more impressive feats in a four-day tournament, recording double-digit hits and avoiding any strikeouts. Bond found the barrel with a lot of consistentcy and made things go for the runner-up Sparks.

Midwest Futures Offensive Onslaught Leads to Championship

MARION, Iowa – The Midwest Futures used a seven-run first inning to propel themselves to a championship at the WWBA 16U North Championship, knocking off the MN Starters 16U National Team by a score of 13-1.

The big inning was the friend of the Futures in the final game, posting 12 of their 13 runs over the course of two half innings. Alex Shelton was the star performer, going 3 for 4 and collecting a trio of RBI. Ethan Edinger also posted a good stat line in the victory, adding three RBI of his own and driving a double.

With so much offensive firepower, Futures starter Jack Shanahan was able to cruise to a five-inning complete game. Shanahan struck out nine on 90 pitches, using a quality three-pitch mix to keep hitters off-balance.

The Futures had been firing on all cylinders throughout the tournament, posting a 6-1 record and scoring double-digit runs in four of their six victories.

The MVP of the WWBA 16U North Championship was Mason Breidenbach. The shortstop recorded eight hits in the event, tallying three extra-base hits and six RBI's. The left-handed hitter was an on-base machine, generating the free pass five times and swiping three bases when he got there.

The MV-Pitcher of the tournament was Cade Wiegert. Wiegert tossed six strong innings in a semifinal victory for the Starters, scattering two hits and striking out 11 batters. The righthander ran the fastball up to 86 mph on Monday, showing good command of the zone with zero walks.
