Central Shutout Southwest for Championship

FORT MYERS, FL.-- The 12U PG Series brought skilled players from all across the country to be showcased together in a tournament in Fort Myers, Florida. The Series spanned a few days starting with opening ceremonies which included multiple skill tests to highlight each team’s talented line up. A standout team during the skills testing was Team Central as two of its players dominated in the two individual skill competitions. 

With such a standout opening performance from members of team Central, their presence in the championship game was no surprise. Throughout pool play, team Central went undefeated scoring twenty-seven runs over three games. When it came time for their semi-final match up, they put up another ten runs and secured their spot in the championship with a score of 10-0. 



Joining them in the championship game would be team Southwest who went 2-1 through pool play. The championship game would not however be the first time Team Central and Team Southwest would meet as Team Central handed Team Southwest their only previous loss during pool play with a score of 11-3. 

As play began in the championship game, Team Central made it known they would be defending their win and taking the championship title. 

It was three up three down from both pitchers Lale Esquivel of Team Central and Alex Lopez of Team Southwest through the first inning. 

Continuing to upset batters, Esquivel had two strikeouts and allowed only one hit in the top of the second. When Team Central came to the plate, it was now Troy Trejo they had to face on the mound. Trejo had a strong start striking out his first batter, but Team Central quickly got their bats going and Trejo wouldn’t be able to end the inning with ease. 

Hitting in the heart of the order, Shane Parker got his team going as he sent a grounder to left for a single. After stealing second, Parker was able to keep making his way home thanks to a line drive to center off the bat of Gianni Corral. Corral himself didn’t spend much time on base either as Lale Esquivel delivered a grounder to first allowing him to sneak home. 

With two outs on the board and a teammate on first, power hitter Jesiah Andrade came to the plate. Andrade turned around a 52 mph curveball with enough power behind it to make it over the fence for a homerun. This performance from Andrade came as no shock as he was the winner of the home run derby during the skills competition. 

The fifth and final run of the inning for Team Central came from a grounder from Colten Springall that slipped out of the hands of the second baseman and allowed Anthony Del Angel enough time to score from third. 

Lale Esquivel continued to perform well on the mound as he saw only four batters from Team Southwest’s line up and allowed just one hit in the top of the third. The same however was unable to be said for pitcher Patrick Petrossi of Team Southwest. 

A fly deep into center from Jaxson Baxter of Team Central quickly put him in scoring position on second. Capitalizing on this opportunity, Colton Christman sent a grounder down the right field line allowing Baxter to round third and score. Pitcher Petrossi worked quickly to then end the inning and give his team an opportunity to put a run on the board. 

Despite Team Southwest’s efforts, pitcher Anthony Del Angel shut them down at the plate. Angel allowed just one hit, walked one batter, and sent three back to the dugout. 

Team Central went into the bottom of the fourth with a 6-0 lead and needed just two more runs to end the game. Gianni Corral started the inning off with a single down the middle to center but soon made his way to third thanks to a ground out from Lale Esquivel. 

After waiting to be brought in from third, Corral eventually made the decision to just go for it and he sprinted to steal home for Team Central’s seventh run. The winning run of the game then came from a sac fly for an RBI off the bat of Anthony Del Angel. 

Team Central took home the 12u PG Series Championship with a 8-0 victory. 

The Most Valuable Player award for the 12u PG Series went to Lale Esquivel. Throughout the championship, Esquivel pitched for three innings allowing just two hits, no walks, and striking out three batters. Offensively, he had one RBI and went one for two at the plate. 

Also from Team Central, Colton Christman was named the Most Valuable Pitcher. Pitching six innings throughout the tournament, Christman struckout thirteen batters and had a total of nineteen outs.
