Blaze Jordan vs Pete Alonso

Photo: Perfect Game
These comparisons are meant to compare each player at similar stages in their prospect journeys in high school and not comparing the high school prospect to the current MLB star.

Pete Alonso 6-3 212, 2010 grad 18.6 on MLB Draft Day

2012 PG National Report
Pete Alonso is a 2013 3B/1B with a 6-3 207 lb. frame from Tampa, FL who attends Plant HS.  Tall, well proportioned athletic build, very strong.  Right handed hitter, straight stance, long and strong swing, best when he isn't trying to pull/lift, has the strength to hit the ball out of the park to all fields, good loose swing, still projects some as a hitter.  7.06 runner, lite on his feet for his size, very good raw arm strength, good hands, accurate throws, actions playable for third, is also a well above average defensive first baseman.  Excellent student, verbal commitment to Florida.

PG Observations
Remember Alonso’s power bat really standing out at the 2011 Southeast Top Prospect Showcase and the one thing he always did was hit. You look back at the notes from all his tournaments, there is always something about him hitting balls hard and hit an absolute bomb at the 2011 WWBA World Championship. I wish we would’ve had Diamondkast back when he was playing, but at the 2012 17u WWBA and WWBA World Championship combined he posted 1.514 OPS with 4 HRs. The way he always performed with a lot of loud contact was probably overlooked a bit coming out of high school.

I remember thinking at the 2012 National in Minnesota that Alonso could have been mistaken for a big time D1 linebacker recruit.  He then proceeded to muscle the baseball to the pull side banging off the left-field wall with consistency.  Then he had a massive Jupiter the next Fall.  I got to witness one of his long home runs that weekend, the buzz that followed was incredible

Blaze Jordan 6-2 222, 2020 grad, 17.5 on MLB Draft Day

2019 PG National Report
Blaze Jordan is a 2020 1B/3B with a 6-2 218 lb. frame from Southaven, MS who attends DeSoto Central. Strong athletic build, looks like he's firmed up and is slimmer than his listed size. Changed body has improved his athleticism and enabled him to potentially play third base at the next level, showed good hands at third base and makes on line accurate throws, charged the ball cleanly with balance, still adjusting to making lower slot throws after growing up at first base. 6.90 runner. Right handed hitter, has huge power that plays in games, big strength at the ball, has cut down his lower half movement and shortened his swing somewhat, handled the barrel well and went 4-4 during the games while using the entire field. Reclassified from the 2021 class this spring and had been the #1 ranked player in that class since his freshman year. Potential elite level hitter with a long track record. Good student, verbal commitment to Mississippi State. Named to play in the Perfect Game All-American Classic.

PG Observations
There are plenty of home runs and hard hits that stand out when watching Blaze, but the moment that sits atop my personal list came this past summer during the 16u WWBA. Less than 12 hours after winning the MLB's high school home run derby Blaze and his family hopped aboard a plane and he was in the lineup for Dulin's Dodgers, hitting out of the three-hole the next morning. While most would likely stay on site for the All-Star festivities, Jordan was back in Georgia doing what he does -barreling the baseball very hard- with two base hits that registered north of 95 mph off the barrel.

So many things have stood out with Blaze’s power over the years starting with the 2015 12u PG Super 25 HR Derby with a temporary fence setup and he was hammering balls over the regular fences on a full size field at 12. Was getting big hits in Jupiter as an 8th grader and has hit 15 HRs at PG Events since 2017. In 2017 he hit HRs at the 14u, 15u, 16u & 17u WWBA and WWBA World Championship in Jupiter. His team wins as well as he has led his team to PG World Series Championships the last 3 years and won the 2020 PG HS Showdown with Desoto Central this year.

My first look at Blaze was the 2017 WWBA World Championship.  He was 14 years old and playing in the most scouted amateur tournament in the world.  His Dulin’s Dodgers team lost 4-1 that Thursday night under the lights.  The lone run was a pull side homer by the young Jordan.  More impressively, it was on a hanging slider that he recognized early, stayed back, and sent it over the left field wall.  At 14 years old he was hitting in the 3-hole on a very good team.  Then he produces like that.  Talk about a first look
