UCLA took on UCI at home for a 14-inning marathon that the teams split up into two separate games. The first nine inning game saw the teams roll out many of their expected starters while the second five-inning matchup saw many guys that are battling for roles on their respective squads.

Infielder Matt McLain looks poised to have a bounce-back season at the plate for the Bruins after hitting just .203 last year in 217 at-bats. He’s a leader in the infield and he’ll be a big leader on this team with athletic actions throughout every aspect of his game. He looks to have made a slight adjustment with his hands this offseason, now beginning in a much lower handset in his stance. As he goes back into his load, his hands go back and up into the launch position as he slightly crouches into his linear weight shift. In his first at-bat of the ballgame he seeded a fastball down over the shortstop for a hard-hit single. His maturity at the plate looks to be coming along nicely and he gives coach Savage a competitive at bat every time he steps to the plate.
