Stephen Strasburg went 2-0 with a 2.51 ERA in his two starts in the World Series, on his way to being named the Most Valuable Player of the Fall Classic. In doing so, Strasburg became the first-ever No. 1 overall draft pick to be named World Series MVP.

Below is a top-10 list of highest drafted World Series MVPs, with Strasburg of course topping the list.

Rk. Player MVP Team Pick Draft Team Draft Year
1 Stephen Strasburg 2019 Nationals 1st overall Nationals 2009
2 Reggie Jackson 1973, 1977 Athletics, Yankees 2nd overall Athletics 1966
2 Josh Beckett 2003 Marlins 2nd overall Marlins 1999
4 Paul Molitor 1993 Blue Jays 3rd overall Brewers 1977
4 Troy Glaus 2002 Angels 3rd overall Angels 1997
6 Darrell Porter 1982 Cardinals 4th overall Brewers 1970
7 Bucky Dent 1978 Yankees 6th overall White Sox 1970
7 Derek Jeter 2000 Yankees 6th overall Yankees 1992
9 Madison Bumgarner 2014 Giants 10th overall Giants 2007
10 George Springer 2017 Astros 11th overall Astros 2011

The Major League Baseball draft started in 1965, which is why Reggie Jackson is the oldest name on the list.

Looking at the list, it would appear teams have started to get better at evaluating young talent, as six of the 10 players on this list have won their World Series MVP since the year 2000. The No. 11 and No. 12 players on this list – Manny Ramirez (13th overall pick in 1991, World Series MVP in 2004) and Cole Hamels (17th overall pick in 2002, World Series MVP in 2008) – would both fall under that category as well.

Strasburg made an appearance at the World Championships in Jupiter in 2005, which you can see highlights of below.
