643 claims Battle of the South

643 Beasley cruises to Upperclass crown

ATLANTA, Ga. – A clash of 643 squads occurred during the championship game of the 2019 PG Upperclass Fall Battle of the South as 643 DP Cougars 17u Beasley took on 643 DP Cougars Sterling/Mang. 643 DP Cougars 17u Beasley would ultimately go on to take home the hardware with a 8-0 victory.

In the championship game, Shane Nelson kicked off the scoring as he hammered a triple into the right-center gap to lead off the bottom of the second inning before going on to score. Nelson would go on to score twice in the ballgame.

Devan Bhatia got the start for 643 DP Cougars 17u Beasley and rose to the occasion. The lefthanded pitcher pounded the outer half with the fastball and then flashed a curveball with big depth keeping hitters off balance. He would go on to throw five innings of scoreless baseball while striking out two batters and giving up just one hit. Bhatia also got it done at the plate as he hammered a ground-rule double over the right field fence to help his own cause. He picked up the win in the game and also claimed event MV-Pitcher honors.

Matt Shook had an outstanding weekend as he was the leader on offense for the 643 DP Cougars 17u Beasley. He showed a short, simple stroke from the left side finding the barrel often. He ended the event with nine RBI and four extra-base hits including a home run on his way to earning MVP honors.

In the semifinals, 643 DP Cougars 17u Beasley faced off against the Smartense Angels- Smith. Colin Stewart got the start for the Cougars and would ultimately pick up the win for his squad pushing them to the championship game. He threw five innings while striking out six batters and giving up just three hits. He also did not walk a single batter.

The 643 organization had three of the final four teams in the event as they showed very well this weekend.

Stellar 'pen outing propels 643 Tigers to Underclass title

MARIETTA, Ga. – After having to wait on the rain to blow through the weekend, the championship of the 2019 PG Underclass Fall Battle of the South finally got underway after 9 p.m. on Sunday evening. 643 DP Tigers 16u Hawkins defeated Brigade Colt 45s Gray after completing a fifth inning rally by a final score of 6-2.

The relief work of Will Brown was the difference as he came in after the first inning with the Tigers down a run. He went on to pitch 643 to victory putting together a line of six innings while spreading out four hits and one run with four strikeouts and no walks. He threw nearly 70 percent strikes and was lights out in relief.

The leader on the offensive side of the ball in the championship game for 643 was leadoff hitter Malachi Cloud. The righthanded slugger drove in a pair of runners with a double to center field and also scored a run himself.

The MVP of the event was Andrew Ianitello of 643 who put up video game numbers in his team’s five games. With an OPS of 1.776, Imitello batted 9-for-11 (.818) with a pair of stolen bases and six RBI.

The Most Valuable Pitcher of the 2019 PG Underclass Fall Battle of the South was awarded to Trent Waldrop of the Brigade Colt 45s Gray. In the opening game of the tournament for the Colt 45s on Saturday the righthander pitched seven one-hit innings punching out four batters in a 4-0 complete game shutout victory.

643 15u Pedraza closes hot fall with Sophomore crown

MARIETTA, Ga. – Late into the night on Sunday at East Cobb those who stuck around witnessed 643 DP Cougars 15u Pedraza take down Smartense Angels 15u West in a slow moving 5-1 victory to cap off a perfect weekend to claim the 2019 PG Sophomore Fall Battle of the South championship.

The team from Roswell, Ga., came into bracket play as the third seed, going 2-0 in pool play. From there, they caught fire and rolled to the title outscoring their opponents in the playoffs 21-7.

In the final at East Cobb, both starting pitchers – Michael Mattison for the 643 DP Cougars and Jackson Frank of the Smartense Angels – moved through the first two innings rather unscathed.

643 jumped on the board first in the top of the third with a three-run home run over the left field fence off the bat of Kameron Douglas. Cole Eison would drive in Will Prigge in the fourth to extend the score to 4-0 and they would tack on an insurance run in the top of the sixth as Walker Barron would lead off the inning with a double and later score on wild pitches.

Smartense only recorded three hits in the championship game but did manage to score a run in their half of the fourth when Jackson Frank took matters into his own hands, after leading off the inning with a single. Frank would round the bases on a passed ball, wild pitch and an error making the score 4-1 at the time.

Douglas took home MVP honors after hitting .455 in five games including his 1-for-2, three RBI performance in the championship game.

Grant Witczak of the Smartense Angels earned MV-Pitcher honors by tossing a complete game shutout in a 1-0 nail-biter to open pool play on Friday. Witczak struck out eight and allowed just two hits in the win.
