WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – A five-run sixth inning gave the Florida Hurricanes 14u Platinum all the breathing room it needed in the championship game of the 2019 WWBA 14u World Championship, as it went on to beat USA Prime National 2024, 9-3.

Maddix Simpson delivered a championship performance for the Hurricanes on the mound, tossing 4 1/3 innings of scoreless, two-hit ball before handing a 2-0 lead over to the bullpen.

Two more runs for the Hurricanes in the bottom of the fifth stretched the lead to 4-0, before a three-run sixth for USA Prime brought the game to within one.

The five-run answer in the bottom of the sixth finally put the game away for the Florida Hurricanes.

Four straight singles to start the frame from Anthony Espinoza, Simpson, Ej Burns, and Adrian Santana started the scoring, with Nicholas Rubino and Sebastian Berrios delivering RBI base hits later in the inning.

The Hurricanes used the same late-scoring formula to get through its first round playoff matchup against Kangaroo Court Roos American, scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a lead and win, 5-2.

Gian De Castro, the MVP of the tournament, laced a double to center field to finish off the scoring in the sixth. De Castro hit .438 during the tournament, with seven hits (three doubles, one triple), three walks, nine runs, six RBI, and three stolen bags.

Theodore Gillen, who played for Crawdads by Yeti Baseball Club, was named the Co-MVP of the tournament along with De Castro. Gillen hit a ridiculous .800 for the tournament, going 12-for-15 with eight singles, two doubles, and two triples. He also scored 12 runs, drove in eight, and stole 12 bags.

The Florida Hurricanes Round 2 matchup against the Central Florida Select 14u required fewer clinched jaws, as the Hurricanes scored two runs in each of the first two innings and three more in the fourth to win by a score of 8-2.

USA Prime National 2024 won a couple close games to reach the championship. In Round 1, a three-run sixth inning pushed its lead over Elite Squad 14u to 6-2, and it went on to win 6-4.

Round 2 was the Mason Arnold show for USA Prime, as the righthanded pitcher tossed six innings of one-run ball, none earned, spreading six hits around and walking only one. Arnold was named the MV-Pitcher of the tournament for his effort.

Two runs in the bottom of the first was all USA Prime needed, as it beat Gillen and his Crawdads, 3-1.
