643 takes National Qualifier

MARIETTA, Ga. – The No. 3 seeded 643 DP Cougars 17u defeated No. 4 seed Team Elite 2020 Black in the championship game of the 2019 WWBA National Qualifier by a score of 2-0 Both teams entered Monday night’s showdown undefeated at 4-0 and the 643 DP Cougars 17u won the eventual second tie breaker of runs scored in pool play (17) making them the home team in this 3 vs. 4 matchup.

All the scoring in the contest happened in the bottom of the third inning as John Armstrong came around to score on a Cooper Krause single for the game’s first run. 643 added to their lead on the very next pitch as Joshua Katz laid down a bunt for a squeeze play to score Ben Medley who earlier in the inning got on by way of a bloop single to the opposite field.

The game was highlighted by the pitching of 643 starter Jared Woodward and the eventual MV-Pitcher of the event Andrew Herrmann, who came in a tossed 4 1/3 innings of one-hit relief. The combined pitching of Woodward and Herrmann completed a two-hit complete game shutout of Team Elite.

The MVP of the 2019 WWBA National Qualifier was 643’s Parker Lester. The Miami of Ohio commit logged five hits in 11 at-bats (.455) with three doubles in the middle of the 643 lineup.

The lefthanded throwing Herrmann tossed seven innings during the event for 643 DP Cougars 17u, recording 12 punchouts without allowing a walk on his way to earning Most Valuable Pitcher honors.

With the win 643 DP Cougars 17u receives a paid invitation to the 2019 WWBA World Championship in Jupiter, Fla.
