Team Spivey wins 13u Select, 5-3

NORMAN, Okla. - At the tail end of a weekend filled with baseball festivities and community service, Team Spivey and Team Bush took the field for a nine-inning contest at L. Dale Mitchell Park that featured Perfect Game’s 30 highest rated baseball players in North America. Led by former big-leaguer Junior Spivey, Team Spivey won the game 5-3 behind a collective effort at the plate.

Anthony Tralongo, who on Saturday evening was named the 2019 13u Perfect Game Player of the Year by the Perfect Game Select Fest, took home MVP honors after knocking in a run on a double and reaching base twice.

The overall talent amongst these players was certainly evident during Saturday morning’s practice, as players seemingly traded 300-foot line drives and gap-splitters during the latter stages of batting practice.

Even Spivey, a former World Series champion who had a .270 batting average in five big-league seasons from 2001-05, couldn’t deny the talent in front of him on Sunday afternoon and said he did not possess the same knack for baseball at that age.

“There’s no way I was on that level at that age, there’s no way,” Spivey. “13 years old, playing the way they play. They’re way ahead of the game and they all have bright futures ahead of them.”

“(There are) future major league ballplayers right there.”

The five runs scored by Team Spivey came from five different sources. Tralongo, Cade Arrambide, Miles Preston Ghossein, Parker Picot and Dyson Fields each knocked in a run.

Notable performances:

Brandon Olivera, a University of Miami (FL) commit who touched 88 mph on the radar gun in a scoreless top of the first inning.

Picot, a Rochester Hills, Michigan native, reached base in all three plate appearances, knocked in a run on a single and also scored a run. Picot appeared on the mound in the 6th inning and allowed no runs on one hit.

Jarren Purify, a Detroit, Michigan native who hit in the leadoff spot for Team Bush, recorded the only two-hit performance of the day.

Jack Frankel ripped an RBI double over that one-hopped the wall in left field, a ringing drive that was likely the furthest hit ball on the day. The Plano, Texas native also struck out two in a scoreless frame on the bump.
