Vanderbilt capped off an incredible season with a 8-2 win over Michigan in game three off the College World Series Finals, which was their 59th win of the season and 10th of the postseason. They were the regular season champions in the SEC and also captured the SEC Tournament title, beating each and every one of the 13 other SEC teams during the season – 10 during the regular season and three more at the SEC Tournament (with another win over Mississippi State in Omaha for good measure). It was their second national championship in six years, also winning it all in 2014 while finishing 2015 as the CWS runner-up.

The Commodores were never ranked lower than seventh in the week-by-week Top 25 teams rankings and finished the year 35-4 after their series loss to Georgia in early April, only one of two weekend series losses (Texas A&M in March) the team suffered.

The bad news for the rest of the teams in the SEC (and the nation) is that Vanderbilt will be returning an incredible amount of talent to next year's squad in an attempt to make it back-to-back national championships. This year's CWS Most Outstanding Player, Kumar Rocker, is only a freshman, and he and sophomore Mason Hickman will form a lethal 1-2 tandem in the weekend rotation. Bullpen-mates Tyler Brown and Jake Eder are sophomores, as are three of their more productive hitters, Austin Martin, Philip Clarke and Pat DeMarco (although Clarke and DeMarco were taken in this year's draft as age-eligible sophomores and it's yet to be determined if they'll sign).

And Vanderbilt will welcome another strong recruiting class, ranked first in the nation before this year's draft.

Michigan may not have the same amount of returning talent but they should be commended for their particularly inspiring season finishing as the College World Series national runner-up. It was a positive sign for college baseball to have so many different teams from so many different conferences and parts of the country represented in Omaha. Four different Power 5 conferences were represented among the final four teams as a team from the SEC (Vanderbilt), ACC (Louisville), Big 12 (Texas Tech) and Big Ten (Michigan) all had the opportunity to advance to the CWS Finals.

That list doesn't include the Pac-12, a conference represented by their regular season champion UCLA; the Bruins spent the last 11 weeks of the regular season as the No. 1 team and entered the postseason as the No. 1 National Seed. UCLA finishes the year ranked seventh despite not making it to the College World Series. Stanford gives the Pac-12 a second Top 10-ranked team to close out the season after enjoying a successful year of their own.

All eight teams that made it to Omaha – Vanderbilt, Michigan, Mississippi State, Louisville, Texas Tech, Arkansas, Floria State and Auburn – were ranked in the Preseason Top 25.

Congratulations to all of the players, coaches and teams overall on successful 2019 seasons. And thanks to you, our readers, for following along all season long. We look forward to doing it all over again next year.
