At a listed 6-foot, 203-pound frame, Pallante has a strong and sturdy, well-proportioned frame with a strong lower half. There’s a lot of moving parts to his delivery, which makes him fun to watch, and the delivery overall has been toned down since his high school days in which there’s less effort and more consistency, both significant positives in his overall development.

Pallante is coming off of a huge sophomore year in which he went 10-1 with a 1.60 ERA on the mound, one of the best performances in the nation by any pitcher. He opened the 2019 season against Washington and appeared to pick up where he left off, attacking the zone with a three-pitch mix that includes a 91-93 mph fastball that touched 94. He also mixes in a big-breaking 73-75 mph curveball and a late-darting 80-82 mph slider.

That combination of pitches was working well early, as Pallante was perfect through four innings, getting plenty of swings and misses at all three offerings. He lost the perfect game in the fifth on a long solo home run and then lost command of the zone altogether with his slider, pulling several into the dirt. From there he made too many mistakes up in the zone and the Washington hitters ended up putting up an eight-spot in the inning.

While the stuff was fine early, with a clear track record of success, the command quickly turned inconsistent and the lack of a changeup became more evident his third time through the order. That said, of the eight innings he allowed in his first game of the year only two were earned, giving up seven hits without issuing a free pass in 4 2/3 innings, fanning six UW hitters.
