Team USA standouts vs. Florida

The University of Florida and the USA Baseball 18u team scrimmaged at Port Charlotte Sports Park, home of the Tampa Bay Rays Class-A affiliate Stone Crabs, as the Gators completed their final scrimmage of the fall and USA Baseball is wrapping up its preparation for the World Cup. The USA team has a good mix of both 2019 and 2020 talent as many of the names on the roster won’t surprise most evaluators as top-ranked prospects such as Bobby Witt Jr, Riley Greene and CJ Abrams are all participating this fall and the 27-man roster is filled with some of the best talent across the country.

Witt has enjoyed a tremendous fall, and it was evident by not only his play during the game but during I/O and BP as he continues to cement himself as the consensus No. 1 prep prospect heading into the 2019 draft. The run times have improved, somehow, from the summer to be consistently plus or better and the glove is almost a sure thing at shortstop. He came within inches of making an incredible behind-his-back-shoulder grab and showed off another very nice play deep in the 6-hole to nail a runner at second base. Offensively, he didn’t take a bad at-bat, battling for an eight-pitch walk in the first and taking very competitive at-bats his second and third trip to the dish, just missing each for fly outs, the final of which had a 6.3 second hang time.




The Oklahoma signee even showed a glimpse of what might happen if the whole position player thing doesn’t work out as he hopped on the mound for a quick, scoreless frame and recorded three strikeouts. Witt sat 92-93 mph with a fairly clean arm stroke and a hard breaker in the low-80s as it’s almost unfair that he can be so good at so many things on a diamond and would still have a future on the mound in almost any situation. You’re reminded of Witt’s talent each time he swings the bat and he looks like the frontrunner to be the first prep prospect off the board next June.
