Top 5 Prospects

1. Carson Seymour, rhp, Southampton (Kansas State*/SO in 2019)
Seymour was named the league’s Pitcher of the Year in addition to being named its top prospect. He garnered that honor given his combination of size (6-foot-5, 235-pounds) and stuff, sitting in the low-90s with his fastball and peaking as high as 96. After a rough spring at Dartmouth in limited duty he went 5-0 on the summer with a 2.63 ERA, striking out 40 in 41 innings of work, throwing both a curveball and a slider in the process while working on a changeup. Experience at this point in time is what Seymour needs the most as his overall command and effectiveness of his off-speed pitches are in need of improvement, and he has transferred to Kansas State to continue his development.

2. Nick Thornquist, c, Sag Harbor (Texas-San Antonio*/JR in 2019)
One of two HBL batters that hit over .400 during the summer in the Hamptons League with a .421 batting average, Nick Thornquist enjoyed a big summer offensively after collectively hitting .319 over two seasons at McLennan Community College. While there’s a little bit of pop in his swing, Thornquist is at his best using his short, compact swing to spray balls from one gap to the other. At 5-foot-8, 180-pounds he isn’t particularly physical but he’s a good receiver and overall athlete, showing good quickness and a strong arm behind the plate. He has transferred to Texas-San Antonio for his junior year.

3. Jake MacKenzie, 2b, Shelter Island (Fordham/SO in 2019)
MacKenzie followed up a strong spring for Fordham with a big summer, hitting .345-10-34 before finishing up his summer on the Cape with the Bourne Braves. He also swiped 35 bases after stealing 34 bases in the spring, with very good first-step quickness and 6.6-6.7 speed in the 60-yard dash. MacKenzie also has surprising pop at 5-foot-10, 185-pounds, doing a very good job making consistent hard contact while showing an advanced approach at the plate. His tools fit best at second base, but he can play shortstop in a pinch.

4. Beau Keathley, rhp, Riverhead (Oakland/SO in 2019)
After a difficult spring season in which he took his lumps while getting some key on-the-job training, Keathley was nearly unhittable during the summer thanks to improved command, going 3-0 out of the bullpen for the league champion Riverhead Tomcats, allowing no earned runs and only four base hits in 19 1/3 relief innings. An extremely lean and lanky 6-foot, 150-pound righthander, Keathley generates a tremenedous amount of deception given his low three-quarters to sidearm slot. His fastball sits in the upper-80s while mixing in a frisbee slider that dives down and away from righthanded hitters.

5. Alex Volpi, 1b, Shelter Island (Holy Cross/JR in 2019)
Volpi enjoyed one of the loudest summers in Hamptons League history, setting a new league mark for home runs with 16 while batting .317 with 46 RBI. For the most part he is a dead pull hitter that doesn’t get cheated at the plate, leading to high strikeout numbers in addition to his power production, and he has batted .197 spanning two seasons at Holy Cross, pointing to some issues to make consistent contact. Those issues continued to be present as he finished his summer on the Cape with Falmouth, but the raw power gives him an exciting tool that will keep him on follow lists.
