Raiders outlast for Jupiter bid

TOMBALL, Texas – On an unusually long day for only three games, the Dallas Raiders Elite outlasted the Banditos Scout Team to clinch the championship of the WWBA South Qualifier by a final score of 6-3. The Raiders fought back from losing the very first game of the tournament to storm back, win the pool, and sprint to the championship final.

Both semifinals were deadlocked as each headed to extra innings and the ultimate matchup in the championship was very much up in the air for a long time. The Banditos downed Premier Baseball Futures with a walk off single in the bottom of the ninth and the Raiders pushed a run across in the ninth inning against Stix Baseball to advance to the championship.

The Raiders got off to a hot start as they touched up Banditos starter, and PG All-American, Sanson Faltine III early. The Texas commit eventually settled in nicely and worked a shutout couple of frames following, but the big underclass bats of the Raiders started off hot. Grand Canyon commit Daniel Garcia drove a soft flare to the pull side that fell for an RBI single and the next batter, No. 8 2020 prospect Masyn Winn, followed that with a technical-double that landed in between both the center fielder and the right fielder. The Raiders were now up three runs with their starter taking the mound in the bottom of the frame.

Louisiana-Lafayette commit Dylan Carmouche was awarded the start and did a really nice job at keeping the opposing hitters off balance all day. Carmouche is a lean 6-foot-5 and really tough to pick up on the mound, as his arm slot changes on nearly every pitch varying from straight over the top to way down at his hip. Carmouche battled all day long and delivered five strong innings in a winning effort.

The Banditos were able to push across a couple of runs in the bottom of the fourth thanks to some errors by the Raiders. After a couple of hits the Banditos were able to bring in two runs following a wild pitch and error by the shortstop with runners on. I’m sure this wasn’t the way the Banditos drew it up, however they weren’t going to turn it down as a bid to the WWBA World Championship was a one run game with three innings to go.

A collection of hits in the top of the fifth and sixth innings push across three more runs as the Raiders extended the lead thanks to RBI batted balls from Jordan Andrade, Yanluis Ortiz, and Jorge Figueroa. Righthander Victor Mederos came in to close the game out and tossed two relatively stress-free, no-hit innings. The Raiders pitching staff was nails all weekend and their talented arms helped them to capture the championship of the WWBA South Qualifier and earn themselves a bid in Jupiter next month.

The MV-Pitcher of the event was Alexander Ayala of the Banditos. Ayala got the win in the quarterfinals with 5 1/3 innings of no-hit baseball and was very impressive in two outings. Dylan Carmouche of the Raiders was named the MVP of the event. Carmouche hit over .400 with extra base hits and earned the win on the mound in the championship game.
