EMERSON, Ga. – After entering the playoffs as one of the lower seeds in the tournament, Nelson Baseball School ran through the competition to capture the championship of the Southeast Qualifier #1 and earn a berth to the WWBA World Championship for the fourth time in the last five years. The offense stood out during the championship victory over Next Level Baseball, particularly their eight-run sixth inning to break the tie and clinch the title.

PG National participant and Tennessee commit Ethan Anderson was trusted the start in the championship and the big righthander did not disappoint. Anderson tossed three shutout innings while allowing only one hit and running his fastball up to 88 mph in the process. Anderson had been a key piece offensively all weekend for Nelson as he hit .471 on the tournament and included numerous 90-plus exit velocity hits and two doubles.

Nelson added four runs in the bottom of the second to jump out to a fast 5-0 lead. The offense had no shortage of contributors, between fourteen runs and fifteen hits, and Nelson was sitting pretty with a 6-0 lead heading into the middle innings.

Next Level was able to chip away at that lead with a two-run top of the fourth and then tie the game in the top of the sixth inning. Most of the damage came from the bottom of the lineup as both Jason Roberts and Wyatt Morrill, the latter being starter of the game for Next Level, collected two RBI apiece.

The wheels came off during the bottom of the sixth inning where Nelson got out to a bases loaded, no outs start with the go-ahead run on third base. Mixed in between some run-scoring walks were two big hits from two of the bigger contributors on the weekend. Tres Gonzalez broke open the 6-6 tie with a two-run, 92 mph single up the middle to reclaim the lead while later in the inning, Justin Tew launched a two-run double that hit off the base of the wall in left field to bring Nelson within one run of the run rule. The following batter lined out before a sacrifice fly brought home the winning run and a berth to the WWBA World Championship later this fall.

The MV-Pitcher of the event was David Warren of Next Level Baseball. The uncommitted senior dazzled in his opening playoff start where he tossed a complete game while allowing only one run and striking out seven batters. Tres Gonzalez of Nelson was named the MVP. The Georgia Tech commit was on fire all weekend with a .625 batting average and three extra-base hits, including a 3-for-4, four RBI performance in the championship game.
