18u Nat'l Championship Preview

Nate Schweers

EMERSON, Ga. – The 17th annual WWBA 18u National Championship returns to the Greater Atlanta area starting June 16. Stars of tomorrow will come from all over the country looking to dethrone last year’s champions, the East Cobb Astros.

In total, teams representing 11 of the 50 states will be in attendance. States represented include California, Illinois, Georgia and Florida, to name a few.

This year’s tournament will also feature some of the top talent in the 2019 class, including the No. 2 player in the class Hunter Barco. Barco, who is the only uncommitted player in the Perfect Game Top 50 for 2019, will be looking to show off a fastball that has been up to 93 from the left side, as well as a bat that has shown big power potential.

Along with Barco, three more of the top 13 players in the 2019 class will be in attendance including No. 7-ranked CJ Abrams (Alabama), No. 8 Jerrion Ealy (Mississippi) and No. 13 Daniel Espino (LSU).

Over the course of the seven-day tournament, 218 games will be played in 25 locations in the area, ending with a championship game at LakePoint on Friday June 22.

“In my opinion, this could be one of the deepest tournament fields we’ve had for this event in a while,” said Perfect Game Tournament Director Justin Amidon. “There are seven pools of eight (56 Teams). With 3-4 teams in each pool that have the potential to advance to bracket play on Thursday, it is difficult to pick a favorite. This will definitely be fun to watch.”

Outside the East Cobb Astros’ victory last year, past champions of this event include: Florida Bombers (2002), Florida Bombers (2003), Diamond Devils (2004), Florida Bombers (2005), Florida Bombers (2006), Chet Lemons Juice (2007), Florida Bombers (2008), East Cobb Braves 17u (2009), Florida Bombers (2010), San Diego Show (2011), East Cobb Yankees 18u (2012), Dulin Dodgers (2013), Knights Baseball 18u National (2014), East Cobb Yankees 18u (2015) and East Cobb Astros (2016).
