National High School Top 50: March 20

The top teams in the country are beginning to solidify themselves as the top four of the National HS Top 50 remain unchanged. Calvary Christian Academy (Fla.), Calvary Christian (Fla.), Bishop Gorman (Nev.) and Blessed Trinity (Ga.) all stand pat while Lake Travis (Texas) becomes the No. 1 ranked team in the state with a thrilling 5-2 rivalry victory last night to remain unbeaten at 17-0. American Heritage (Fla.) moves up one spot to No. 6, while Notre Dame (Calif.) is a team led by many talented underclassmen and is still undefeated at No. 7. Hattiesburg (Miss.), Argyle (Texas) and Sam Houston (La.) round out the top 10 as Argyle and Sam Houston in particular both made significant jumps as both are in the midst of unbeaten seasons.

Some other significant risers in this edition of the rankings include No. 22 John Curtis Christian (La.) and No. 23 Gulfport (Miss.), each up 16 spots, Basic (Nev.) up 11 spots to No. 24, and Valley Christian (Calif.) up 20 spots to No. 25. Valley Christian is especially interesting as they are led by Patrick Wicklander on the mound and appear to be the class of Northern California so far for this young season.

Seven new teams enter the Top 50 which include No. 34 Huntington Beach (Calif.), No. 35 Zachary (La.), No. 36 McGill-Toolen (Ala.), No. 42 Southlake Carroll (Texas), No. 46 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.) and No. 47 Sheridan (Ark.). The Huntington Beach Oilers were one of the teams to achieve No. 1 status last year, while the other programs are consistent in their respective regions, however, it is worth noting the impressive baseball thus far from the Gulf Coast as two Mobile-centric teams are in the Top 50 – the other being Faith Academy (Ala.) at No. 43 – and the rankings also feature four Louisiana teams and two from Mississippi.

The National High School Invitational opens this Wednesday and a number of teams included in the rankings will be on the national stage. The five teams in the current Top 50 No. 1 Calvary Christian, No. 6 American Heritage, No. 8 Hattiesburg, No. 13 (and defending champions) Orange Lutheran (Calif.), and No. 22 John Curtis Christian. The field also features three schools in the Preseason Top 50: Walton (Ga.), Florence (Ala.), and Mater Dei (Calif.).

George Jenkins (Fla.), Mount Carmel (Ill.), Hanover (Va.), Santiago (Calif.), Mountain Ridge (Ariz.), Trinity Prep (Fla.), Sandra Day O'Connor (Ariz.), and Green Hope (N.C.) round out the rest of the field. Perfect Game will be on site for the entire event so be sure to follow along for an action-packed week of baseball sure to throw the rankings in all sorts of directions.
