Virginia
Shortstop was the key position this fall in Charlottesville and this is an interesting competition between one sophomore (Cayman Richardson) and two freshmen (Devin Ortiz and Tanner Morris). All three are viable options with the uber-athletic Ortiz providing the most offensive upside.
Veteran Jake McCarthy is a national breakout candidate as he has added strength to go with his already elite run tool. Speaking of veterans, this pitching staff is particularly intriguing as the names are familiar but the production has been inconsistent. That said, Derek Casey, Daniel Lynch, Bennett Sousa and Chesdin Harrington have all improved, and if things break right, this could be Virginia’s deepest staff in the last several years. Of this group, Derek Casey looks ready to emerge in a big way.
