Spring League Week 3 Recap

It was a beautiful Saturday for baseball and and cold rainy Sunday for the Iowa Spring League.  Thankfully we were able to get in all but 6 innings of baseball considering the weather conditions Sunday afternoon.  Looking to this weekend we will be updating the schedule as Saturday is an ACT Testing date.  We also were able to secure the University of Iowa, so we'll be updating the locations as well.  Check the schedule page for all schedule updates.  

McCay and Marchesani combine to no-hit Grey Wolves



Nic McCay (2018 - Carlisle) and Austin Marchesani (2017 - Cedar Falls) were outstanding for the Golden Bears Sunday.  They absolutely carved up the Grey Wolves combining on a no hitter that also included zero walks and 15 strikeouts.  McCay pitched at 83-86 MPH touching 87 MPH once and threw 3 pitches for strikes.  He was very efficient only throwing 40 pitches in his 3 innings of work.  His curveball had its usual sharpness and he showed excellent command of his fastball.  Kirkwood commit Marchesani was even more efficient as he threw 36 pitches in his 3 innings of work.  He pitched at 80-83 MPH with his fastball and also threw 3 pitches for strikes.  Marchesani throws a deceptive change up with good sink and he shows excellent feel for it.  Both pitchers showed excellent pitchability and feel for all 3 pitches.  

Probst with another quality outing

Ben Probst (2017 - Dowling Catholic) pitched well going 2 innings allowing 1 hit with 3 strikeouts and no walks.  He pitched steady at 89-91 MPH and located his fastball well.  He threw a quality 3 pitch mix all for strikes.  He averaged 11 pitches per inning and was 5 for 6 on first pitch strikes.  

Vander Molen does it on the mound and with the bat

Kade Vander Molen (2018 - Pella Christian) has had a very good spring thus far and he continued it this past weekend.  Vander Molen pitched at 82-86 MPH touching 87 MPH and allowed just 1 hit in 3 innings.  He's made a jump in velocity since last fall and is showing some pitchability as well.  He's also among the league leaders in most offensive categories and he collected another hit this weekend.  Vander Molen has made some improvements this off-season and will be followed closely to see how he continues that improvement.

Llewellyn with another quality outing

Luke Llewellyn (2018- Urbandale) is the league leaders in strikeouts and his performance on Saturday certainly helped his cause.  He pitched 4 innings of 1 hit baseball and struck out 9.  He's pitching at 80-84 MPH with his fastball and showing feel for his curveball.  There's more velocity in there, so it'll be interesting to see what happens when he makes those adjustments.  

Houston with dominant outing

Braden Houston (2018 - Iowa City West) threw fantastic for the Black Magic Saturday.  He threw 38 pitches in 3 innings of work allowing just 1 hit while striking out 7.  He located his fastball well and his best pitch by far was his change up.  It had nasty sink to it and he showed a lot of feel for it.  Houston showed excellent pitchablity and located well.  He also collected a hit in the game.

Crawford with big weekend at the plate

Evan Crawford (2018 - Pleasant Valley) had a huge weekend at the plate collecting 8 hits, 1 double, 2 triples, 6 RBI, and 4 runs.  He hit the ball hard all weekend with consistent barrel contact.  He's shown some bat speed and gap to gap pop.

Collin McCrabb (2019 - Wilton) swung the bat well this weekend collecting 4 hits with a double, 3 RBI, and 1 run.  He generates good bat speed and really throws the barrel to the baseball.  The ball jumps off his bat when he squares it up and he showed solid young hitting tools.

Ono-Fullard swings it

Izaya Ono-Fullard (2017 - Iowa City West) swung it well on Sunday vs. the Blue Crew.  He consistently barrels up the baseball and hits the ball hard.  He has shown high level hitting tools and continued that on Sunday.

Burkhart showed solid tools

Trevor Burkhart (2018 - Davenport West) showed good tools at the plate and defensively.  He had 3 hits on the weekend and scored 4 runs.  He has a quick swing that produces line drive contact.  He also made all the plays defensively including a difficult slow roller from SS.  

Trever Brown makes a jump

Trever Brown (2018 - Don Bosco) made a nice velocity jump from the previous 2 weeks going from topping at 84 MPH to 86 MPH this past weekend.  There's more velocity to come as the warmer weather Saturday certainly helped bodies get warmer.  He also pitched well going 3 innings allowing 3 hits and 1 unearned run.  

Patzner with another quality outing

Luke Patzner (2018 - Urbandale) pitched at 86-89 MPH with his fastball and threw a lot of strikes.  He followed up last weekends quality outing with another one and is starting to develop some consistency.  He allowed 1 hit in 3 innings with 7 strikeouts and 1 walk.  

Connor's pitch well in defeat

Connor Van Scoyoc (2018 - Jefferson) and Connor Schultz (2017 - Cedar Falls) both pitched well in a 1-0 pitchers duel vs. the Grey Wolves.  Van Scoyoc topped at 88 MPH with his fastball and Schultz topped at 87 MPH with his fastball.  They combined on 13 strikeouts and just 3 walks.
