Perfect Game Junior College Top 25: May 10

In the blink of an eye, the 2016 regular season flew by, and after taking last week off from the rankings, we have some big risers in this week’s update and also welcome seven new teams to the party, although a few of them were ranked in the preseason and earlier in the regular season.

Cowley, Yavapai, Cisco and Cypress were all ranked in our preseason Top 50, none lower than 28th, and after hitting a few bumps during the season, all four of those teams have dusted themselves off and are peaking at the right time. Cowley, Yavapai and Cisco all won their regional tournaments and punched their tickets to the JUCO World Series, and Cypress has advanced to the California Community College State Playoffs. It’s always great to see teams battle adversity and come together in the end to keep the dream alive.

The top two spots in our rankings remain unchanged with San Jacinto still sitting in the top spot and Santa Fe right on the Gators heels in second. Both of these teams have been dominating all season and surely deserved their respective trips to Grand Junction.

Our preseason No. 2 team, Iowa Western checks in at No. 3 this week after weathering a slow start and ending up reaching 50 wins once again. Coach Rardin is one of the best in the business and he has his Reivers firing on all cylinders as they get set to face off against Santa Fe in game one of the World Series on Saturday.

Rounding out the top 5 are Chattahoochee Valley at fourth and Santa Rosa in fifth. Chattahoochee Valley will be playing Harford in game two of the World Series on Saturday while Santa Rosa will take on once again ranked Cypress in the State Playoffs.

Harford and Mercer County have both been surging up the rankings the last few weeks of the season and both crack the top 10 for the first time this season. Harford will be heading to the JUCO World Series for the first time in school history, so congratulations to Coach Eller and his Fighting Owls team for this awesome achievement.

Jones County, Lower Columbia and Darton State all crack the Top 25 for the first time this season and deservingly so. Jones County finished the regular season 49-8 and are heading to the D-ll World Series in Enid, Oklahoma. Lower Columbia (33-12) is off to the Northwest Athletic Conference championships in Longview, Washington and enter that tournament as the No. 1 seed from the West Division. Darton State had quite a wild weekend highlighted by a big come-from-behind win against a very strong Dyersburg State team and will now head off to the JUCO World Series to face Cisco on Saturday afternoon.

Whether you’re in the NJCAA, CCCAA, or NWAC, we will be following closely this weekend as the road to the rings really heats up and we’ll be back June 5 with our final rankings of the season. Good luck to all of the participating teams.

Rankings are based on games through Sunday, May 22
