2007 California Underclass Showcase
Zachery Leonard is a 2008 C/2B with a 5'7'', 160 lb. frame from Spanaway WA, who attends Bethel HS. He has a strong, compact body type and showed himself to be a versatile player during the showcase, with solid ability at both 2nd base and behind the plate. Offensively Leonard starts with an open stance and closes up during his stride. He showed some hand speed and hit pitches in his zone hard. His swing plane is flat and he has a short follow through. Leonard does tend to move aggressively with is body during the swing which can cause some inconsistency and will expose him to pitchers with good command and feel. Defensively his strengths that translate to both 2nd base and catcher are quick feet and a quick transfer of the ball to his throwing hiand. His hands are soft, and serve him well in the field and behind the plate. His lowest pop-time in the workout was 1.95, indicating that he has a chance to be a realy solid catch/throw catcher. The ball comes out of his hand well. Physically Leonard may be a bit limited, but he can play a bit and showed a solid feel for the game.
