John Essig is a 2021 LHP/1B with a 5-10 160 lb. frame from Commerce Township, MI who attends Orchard Lake St. Marys Prep. Medium and slender frame with room to fill throughout. Ran a 7.91 second 60 yard dash. Primary lefthanded pitcher, begins his delivery with a short side step working into a leg lift above the belt, takes his arm back to a full arm action up to a 3/4 arm slot, releases with an extended arm and creates some extension out in front, utilizes drop and drive actions working down the mound, lands online to the plate with some lower half involvement while possibly being able to get more for additional velocity. Fastball topped out at 77 mph with frequent cutting action, mixed in a 1-to-7 curveball with some tightness, also showed a changeup with maintained fastball arm speed, filled up the strike zone and worked a solid outing on the bump. Secondary first baseman, fields the baseball with developing hands working from the ground up, comes up to an upright release and a loose arm action. Lefthanded hitter, sets up at the plate with a slightly open stance, hits the baseball out in front with a longer swing plane, creates a good launch angle while flashing jump to his pull side.
