2006 Spring Top Prospect Showcase
Matt Coffey is a 2007 OF/P with a 5'11'', 140 lb. frame from Urbandale, IA, who attends Urbandale HS. Coffey has a lean body with room to fill out and get stronger. Defensively he flashes arm strength from the outfield at 77 mph with a short arm action. His throws are online with carry and good accuracy. At the plate he is a right handed hitter with a nice set-up. Coffey stays balanced throughout his swing with sound swing fundamentals. He takes a short stride with a high hand set, but he loads his hands well and gets them in position to hit. Coffey is a contact hitter who will put the ball in play. On the mound he has good mechanics, and throws from a 3/4 arm slot with a short arm circle on the back side. He stays balanced over the rubber and stays online in his delivery. His fastball gets cutting action from 68-71 mph. Coffey is an excellent student as well.
