2006 California Underclass
Joe Spizzirri is a 2007 LHP/1B from J. Serra HS, residing in Capistrano, CA, with a 6'3" 180 lb. frame. Spizzirri was named to the top prospect team at the California Underclass Showcase. He has a good pitcher's body with some lower body strength. He is solidly built and pretty athletic. Spizzirri pitched with an over the top slot and a shallow backside arm arc. His arm works and he has a delivery similar to Mike Hampton's. He has good body control and works to use his front side for leverage. Overall he showed a clean delivery and was generally on time with his body mechanics. Spizzirri's FB was up to 82 mph with good down angle in the strike zone. He flashed and above average CB in warm-ups but didn't have the feel of it in the game. Spizzirri used a 74-76 SL/cutter in the game instead. He is still working on gaining pitchability. With the bat he showed some decent hands and sprayed the ball at times. However, he mostly pulled the ball. He hits from a spread out lower half and showed a pretty good approach with a usable swing plane. On defense Spizzirri throws from a 3/4 slot with a slinging arm action. He stays low on grounders. This is a good D1 follow on the mound. The CB is in there and his body is good.
