Michael Chovanec is a 2008 LHP/1B/OF from James Martin HS in Arlington, TX, with a 5'10'', 140 lb. frame that hasn't started to mature yet. He has a very slow, under control "Chris Hammond" style delivery with a slow leg lift and a compact arm action. He also has some effort on release with some fall off to third base. Chovanec's fastball was up to 77 mph. His 68 mph curveball had good velocity in relation to his fastball and a sweeping 2/8 break. Although he is listed as a primary left handed pitcher, we evaluated Chovanec higher as a hitter. He has some bat speed for his age and build and has very good bat head skills. Chovanec is short and quick to the ball and centers up on the ball very consistently. He really isn't strong enough to drive consistently it yet, but has the easy swing and hitting skills to develop into a very good hitter when he matures. He should be watched carefully as a hitter as well as a pitcher.
