Dominic Smaldino is a 2023 RHP/1B, 3B with a 6-5 205 lb. frame from Ladera Ranch, CA who attends JSerra Catholic. Large tall frame. Ran the 60 yard dash in 7.63 seconds. Primary right-handed pitcher, simple side step moving into delivery, high leg lift up past belt, gets tall on backside and drives off rubber well, lands slightly closed with strike foot. Full arm action through the back with some depth, solid arm speed coming to release point and stays loose. Ran fastball up to 85 mph and maintained low-80s throughout, picked up lots of empty swings over three innings, heavy life with downhill plane. Occasionally rushes down the mound working out of stretch. Maintained arm speed on both a changeup and curveball, showing depth through the zone with tight spin to the breaker. Also worked out at first base, moves well for his size, showed soft hands and good footwork, moves well laterally and made firm accurate throws. Also worked out in the middle infield, was able to clock up to 82 mph on throws across. Has a quick transfer and release and made firm accurate throws, the ball carries well through the glove. Was comfortable throwing from a lower arm slot. Right-handed hitter, hits from an even base, hands sit even with the shoulder and load back. Displayed a simple compact swing with good bat speed. Has a middle of the field approach, showing good pull side pop. Excellent student. Verbal commitment to California.
