Derek Smith is a 2019 OF/SS with a 5-9 170 lb. frame from Arundel, ME who attends Kennebunk. Medium frame with athletic, twitchy build; good projection remaining. Ran 60 yard dash in 6.76 seconds. Sets up to hit from even-based stance with high back elbow; shifts well into contact creating torque in hips, leverage present, good bat speed through the zone with smooth barrel. Consistently barreled the ball up, drove it on rising line to pull side and up the middle, potential high level hitter. Primary outfielder, moves well and is light on feet, fields cleanly off to side and works through the ball, shows quick release with good arm strength, clocked up to 87 mph. Also took reps in the infield, waits back on ball, fields okay, exaggerated windup into throwing mechanics, elongated release across. Pitched as well; higher take back arm stroke into max effort delivery, creates angle from three quarters arm slot, fastball worked 78-83 mph with good sinking life. Worked in curveball with power depth; good feel for the pitch overall. Excellent student, verbally committed to Bryant. Named to 2017 Northeast Underclass Showcase Top Prospect List.
