Austin Curtiss is a 2018 1B/3B/RHP with a 6-1 220 lb. frame from Coralville, IA who attends Iowa City West HS. Large frame with a solid build and present strength. Primary first baseman with smooth paced, deliberate footwork while ranging to and surrounding the baseball. Centers the baseball well while funneling with clean glove actions and developing fluidity. Extended glove to hand exchanges while working through transfer. Releases from an over top arm slit that generates some carry across the infield, topped at 71 mph. Right handed hitter with an upright, open stance and toe tap trigger. Shows a compact, inside barrel path to contact that produced a line drive swing plane through extension. Created some leverage through finish when connecting with baseball out front. Lets the baseball travel deep into the hitting zone while employing a mid-field to opposite field approach. Consistently squared up baseball throughout batting practice while occasionally producing rising line drives to the gaps when front side trigger was on time. Also pitched showing a simple side step to leg lift delivery. Stays tall on back side at gather and utilizes lower half well with slight drop and drive actions. Gets on top of baseball well while releasing from a high three-quarters slot. Generated good downward plane to the plate with a fastball that ranged in the mid 70's, topped at 77 mph. Consistently filled the strike zone with the developing ability to spot up on the edges of the plate. Very good student as well.
