Joey Mellano is a 2006 catcher/outfielder from Fallbrook HS in Bonsall, CA, with a 6'2", 190 lb. frame. He has a strong body with sloped shoulders and a good lower half. Defensively he has a strong arm with good footwork on his throws and blocking balls. His throws are on-line, and he has good ball transfers. Mellano sets up well behind the plate, and has good receiving skills. At the plate he is a right handed hitter with good bat speed from an upright and slightly open stance. There is a slight loft in his swing plane, an Mellano tries to hit everything hard. He has present strength in his swing and has the potential to hit with power in the future. He runs well for a player of his size, and he shows good instincts on the bases. Mellano is a very good defensive catcher who should be followed. He is also an outstanding student.
