Tyler Welch is a 5'10" senior catcher from Canada who has some good hand strength and handled the wood bat pretty well, especially in games. Welch has the short, strong arms that often correspond with good hitters and he takes a short cut and generates some nice bat speed. He will cut himself off on occasion and dive into the ball, and better balance would help him with more consistent contact. Defensively, Welch’s catching skills are still on the raw side. He threw better in game action than in workouts, and had pop times as low as 2.08 between innings. Tyler can play!
