Matt Esparza is a 2012 SS/3B with a 6-2 170 lb. frame from Redondo Beach, CA who attends Redondo Union HS. Lean athletic look, potential to get stronger. Left handed hitter, patient hitter, will work counts, loose swing with upper cut swing plane, gets coiled and loaded well, generates bat speed, flashes hard pull contact but tends to hit under the ball, good hitting tools to develop with a more level approach. Good arm strength defensively, looked very balanced and polished at second base, range to his right, multiple impressive plays, soft hands, good release, did not look as comfortable at shortstop, especially with footwork. Excellent student.
