PG Grade: 9
Steve Gonzalez is a 2005 catcher/first baseman from Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, with a 6'0", 180 lb. frame. Defensively he has great arm strength at 81 mph, and threw pop times consistently under 2.00 during the workouts. He showed good footwork and the ability to block balls well. He has strength in his swing with very good bat speed. Gonzalez has a natural loft in his swing with easy raw power. He likes the ball on the inner half, but did show the ability to still hit the ball the other way with authority. He collected 3 hits in his 6 at bats during the showcase games, and battled tough in some at bats. His combination of arm strength and power bat make him a top level prospect to watch.
