Michael Smith is a 2007 RHP/3B/OF from Rancho Buena Vista HS in Vista, CA, with a projectable 6'3", 165 lb. frame. Smith was named to the top prospect team at the event and showed well on the mound and at the plate. The RHP throws from a 3/4 arm slot with good arm action. Smith has good balance in his delivery and gathers himself over the rubber well. He finishes all of his pitches well and keeps everything down in the zone. His fastball topped out at 86 mph and it is easy to see him being a 90+ guy before he graduates high school. Working off his fastball he mixes in solid secondary pitches with good control. His curveball gets good downward action and his changeup has late life with sink. Offensively he has an advanced approach for his age with good balance and leverage. There is a slight loft in his swing and he shows present raw power. Smith has very good two way talent and is a must follow. It will be fun to track his progress over the next two years.
