Phillips is a 5-11, 155 lb middle infielder from Tennessee who has some wiry strength in his slender frame. He shows very good quickness in his actions and ran the 60 in 6.94 on the slow Fort Myers track. Phillips had some arm strength at 79 mph in workouts. With his speed he might be an asset in centerfield on defense. Phillips hit from an unorthodox no load/no trigger approach with very low hands to start his swing. It seems to work for him as he made solid line drive contact in batting practice and had three hits in the 2 showcase games, including a nice double. One has to think that Phillips would have a higher offensive ceiling with a different approach but who can tell. Phillips is an excellent student as well. He is athletic and he can play!
