2005 California Top Prospect Showcase
Jon Pirkle is a 2006 1B/P from Albany HS, residing in Albany, CA, with a 6'0", 185 lb. frame. He has a wide and strong build and will be able to handle power/strength gains in the coming years. Pirkle hits from a square stance and displayed good balance during an aggressive swing. He easily got to the pull side and made plenty of hard contact. There is some future potential in that swing due to his strength, bat speed, and aggressive nature. In the field Pirkle showed good hands at first base. His strong arm tracked well across diamond. Though he has a chance to hit a bit, Pirkle looked to be a better prospect on the mound. He pitches from an over the top slot and has a loose arm. He has a compact delivery with some rhythm which allows him to finish his pitches with good extension. Pirkle tilted the fastball (80-83) well through zone. He gets tight spin on curveball (65-67) and although it is not thrown with great velocity, it did have snappy action at times. He throws that curveball aggressively, making it a pitch he can get outs with. In all Pirkle was aggressive with his pitches, as he was as a hitter. His arm and stuff are both pretty projectable, and his build is good for young developing power pitcher. Not certain of his intentions or desires, it would appear that Pirkle would benefit from going to a JC where he can continue to hit and play first base, but more importantly get more valuable time to develop as a pitcher.
