2003 South Top Prospect Showcase
Phillips is a slick fielding shortstop that showed some of the best range in Waco. He has a good 6 foot tall and 165 pound frame and nice instincts. His glove was outstanding and he showed a strong arm across the infield with 82 mph velocity and accuracy on the throw. He did not show the foot-speed for SS at the next level and that might move him to 2B or even 3B down the road. His actions, glove, arm and range showed well for us all weekend. His swing was good and he creates excellent bat-speed. He gets the bat through the zone quick but as he grows into that body he will get much stronger and the bat-speed might become even better yet. He was a free swinger, but in a showcase with good pitching we saw him attack fastballs and show a very aggressive approach..
