LATEST PG SHOWCASE REPORT
2006 National Showcase
Iden Nazario is a 2007 left hand hitting 1st baseman/left hand pitcher from Southridge HS, residing in Miami, FL. He is strong and put together well with a 6'0" 190 lb. frame. Nazario is one player that gets a lot of eyes drawn to him, whether he is at the dish or on the mound. He was ranked #16 among PG National Top 100 position players and also would have earned a spot in the Top 85 pitchers had he only been a pitcher. It looks like long term his bat will take him further, but when he is good on the mound, he is very good. Nazario seemed to really enjoy the game and the spotlight, the gut feeling here is that he is a big game performer. He hits from a square stance and is an aggressive hitter, with plus bat speed. He has a flat swing plane that creats a lot of spin and carry. Combine those attributes to his strength and bat speed and the ball jumps off his bat. Nazario creates good leverage at contact and showed plus pull side power, taking an upper 80s fastball deep out of the yard in one of his team's games. He flat out hammers fastballs that are middle in and is always ready to hit the heater. Nazario is a middle of the order bat and a pretty intimidating presence in the box, seemingly exuding confidence and superiority over the pitcher. In the field he showed a plus arm that seems a waste at 1st base but his soft hands and energy for the position are big positives for him there. On the mound he has good raw amr strength, generating fastballs up to 92 with a short, quick arm action that really doesn't look capable of throwing that hard. Nazario tilts the fastball through the bottom of the zone and attacks hitters. His best pitch is his hard rolling curveball that was up to 77 mph. He showed the ability to pitch with the breaking ball and to change speeds, ranging down to 70 mph. His delivery is simply and compact, allowing him to throw a lot of strikes. He is competitive all over the diamond and it is no different on the mound, where he could be an excellent closer in college. Nazario ran 4.58 home/1st and 7.39 in the 60. He is a premium D1 talent and also will draw significant draft interest. His bat can be sent out into pro ball and with his pitching as a fallback, he is going to get a lot of attention this spring.
