Derek Whitfield is a 2011 RHP/1B with a 6'2'', 250 lb. frame from Gulfport, MS who attends Biloxi HS. He has an extra big frame but lots of extra weight for his age and size. Whitfield throws from a low 3/4's release point and has a simple, balance delivery. His fastball was 68-71 mph and he threw a sweeping slider from the same release point at 63 mph. His primary pitch was a floating knuckleball in the low to mid 50's. Whitfield also has some raw power at the plate and takes a full, aggressive swing. He's very young and still developing.
