Ryan Mattes is a 2009 RHP/1B with a 6'6'', 170 lb. frame from Virginia Beach, VA who attends Frank W. Cox. Ryan has a tall lean build that projects well for the future. On the mound Ryan throws with a short compact arm action that produces good armside run from a high 3/4 arm slot. He has an advanced feel for his off-speed pitches with a tight 12 to 6 curveball and good feel for a straight change-up. Ryan's velocity projects well, but he needs to make sure he finishes center to the plate. At the plate Ryan has a level swing plate with solid bat speed and produces consistent solid contact. He will squares up some pitches, but needs to make sure he doesn't get too long with his swing. Ryan has clean actions around the bag at first base and makes a good target for fielders. With natural progression Ryan should attract the attention of many mid to high-level college programs.
