Jon Barrera is a 2019 LHP/OF with a 6-0 155 lb. frame from Corpus Christi, TX who attends King HS. Medium frame, young athletic, lean build with plenty of room to fill out at physical maturity. Primary lefthanded pitcher, short rocking step into windup with slight pause at apex of high leg lift. Deception in delivery, hides the ball well, generally repeats mechanics well but at times can open frontside early. Fastball up to 82 mph, shows some life and natural tailing action from lower 3/4's arm slot, gets on hitters quickly. Flashed solid feel for a sweeping curveball with good depth and tight rotation, showed ability to throw both pitches for strikes and keep hitters off balance. Also plays outfield, shows solid defensive fundamentals with good aggression, footwork, and momentum through the ball. Up to 84 mph in defensive drills. Left handed hitter, medium leg lift trigger. Extended hand load, has some moving parts that lead to inconsistent swing plane, but noticeable bat speed and some fluidity, looseness. Strong overall skill-set and tools for age group. Named to the National Underclass South Showcase Top Prospect List. Good student.
