For two days at the PG National, Pacheco was a very solid middle infield prospect. He played mostly second base and showed an average arm, good actions and enough bat speed and contact to make us believe that he would hit at the next level. At 6-0 and a solid 185 lbs, Pacheco also had some present strength that took some projection out of the picture. That was until we saw him on the mound. Pacheco’s infield arm strength carried over as expected as far as velocity went; he was steady at 86-88 mph. But the eye opener was his curveball. It was easily the best breaking ball in Lincoln; nasty, filthy, whatever you wanted to call it. Not only could the hitters not touch it, a pretty good catcher was just trying to knock the ball down and those were on the strikes. Pacheco threw it 77-79 mph and it wasn’t just short and quick, it was big and sharp and late and Pacheco threw it consistently for strikes. It will be interesting to see Pacheco throw the rest of the summer at close to sea level. Albuquerque, of course, is at altitude where the ball doesn’t break as hard and scouts will be hard pressed to see the same type of action next spring. Pacheco is an athlete who can really pitch at the very highest levels. As a 6'0 RHP he may not get as much MLB interest as he deserves, but all college power programs should get all over him. Jordan is a very good student.
