Jakob Russell is a 2021 LHP/1B, OF with a 5-11 160 lb. frame from Fontana, CA who attends Chaffey HS. Jakob is a twitchy, well built, medium framed athlete. He shows projectable ability at more than one position. In addition to his obvious talents on the diamond, Jakob is also an exemplary student. He ran a 7.71 60 yard dash. A primary LHP, Jakob is a polished veteran hurler who knows how to work the zone. He works down the slope well utilizing a longer takeaway and extended finish. His mechanics are not forced and he repeats them with cool efficiency. He works off his well-commanded 78-80 mph fastball that shows consistent arm side run and heavy sink. He works his heater to both sides of the dish and keeps it in the lower half of the zone. His 12/6, 65 mph curveball has routine big late depth at the plate. The 64 mph 1/7 shaped slider is a sound offering that is classic in both shape and depth. His slider has a certain ability to be a big "out" pitch to LHH, His 68 mph change up is a plus feel pitch that tunnels from the FB window and is thrown with FB arm quickness. His CH is a very mature pitch. Jakob has plus feel for four highly developed pitches. Although he may be about done growing physically, he has all the make-up to impact at the next level on the mound. He is certain to fill out and add velo. His secondary stuff is already there. Jakob also took a turn in the outfield and his natural athletic ability shown through there. His quick and sure feet allow him to position well. He plays through the fielding action at an advanced level. His glove work is solid and he transitions quickly. His 81 mph throws from the OF hold their plane and are highly accurate. As good as his actions are in the OF, he may be even better at 1B. He really moves well around the bag. His footwork is smooth and natural. Nothing looks forced. His glove is smooth and he gets the ball out quickly. His 79 mph throws are spot-on accurate. His offensive game, while good, is still a bit of work in progress. He has the right idea, however. His stride has some length and his swing plane is a bit steep, but he does get his barrel to and through contact well. When his timing is right, he can impact the ball. There is a lot to like about Jakob's overall game. He shows a number of tools that are solid now and will certainly improve as he moves through his senior season this year. He certainly showed many that he is ready for college ball.
