Caleb Hurst is a 2007 right hand pitcher from Beyer HS, residing in Modesto, CA. Though listed at 6'1" 175 lbs, Hurst looks bigger than that, in a positive way, with a strong, wide, sturdy and durable looking build. He showed some good pitchability and good stuff to rank #79 among PG National Top 85 pitchers. He pitched from a high 3/4 slot with a long arm stroke. His take away led his back side arm extension toward 2nd base but he took enough time over the rubber to create good arm speed. Hurst's delivery is good, with some rhythm and for the most part on line direction to the plate. There is som effort in his arm stroke, but the ball does leave his hand pretty well. As for his stuff, he topped at 89 mph and pitched in the 86-88 range with a fasball that seemed sneaky to the hitters. His best pitch was a slurvy 71-72 mph curveball that showed depth adn a variance of shapes, ranging from a 11/5 type breaker to one that had more lateral plane, though all were curveballs. Hurst used the breaking ball for outs quite well and was able to get hitters to offer at it. There is not a lot of projection with Hurst, but is seems reasonable to suggest a few more mph on the fastball, an incremental jump of velocity with the breaking ball, and all the while having enough pitchability to get outs. He is a D1 prospect and with a jump this spring should earn some attention from his area scouts.
