Zac Russell is a 2008 C/3B with a 5'10'', 190 lb. frame from Bulverde, TX, who attends Smithson Valley HS. Named to the Top Prospect Team at this event. Russell has a great catcher's frame with good present strength. Behind the plate he shows a strong arm (77 mph) on his throws to second base with pop times consistently in the 1.9s. His throws are very accurate with online carry through the bag, and he is an advanced catcher that should control an opposition's running game. Offensively he has a quick bat with a short and compact swing. The ball jumps off his bat and he shows raw power with leverage in his swing. Russell centers the ball well, and projects as a middle of the order run producer at the next level. Russell also took the mound for one inning showing a fastball that topped out at 86 mph with zip through the zone. As projectable as Russell may be on the mound, it is hard to take a advanced defensive catcher with raw power and put him on the mound. He has great upside, and is an excellent student as well.
