Chris Johnson is a 2006 CF from Iolani HS, residing in Aiea, HI with a 5'9" 185 lb. frame. Named to the Top Prospect Team, Johnson has a strong and athletic body type with a broad upper body. Johnson hits from a slightly closed stance and has a good presence in the box. He has good balance and is short to the ball. Johson has good bat speed and easily gets to the pull side. In some instances Johnson's swing is Damonesque with a little more lift. He throws his hands to the ball well and with his strong upper body he can lift the ball quite easily. Johnson has some power, particularly middle-in. He gets into and through the zone well and is lively at contact. Johnson's hips are the key to his being able to use the opposite field, which will be his key to becoming a more complete hitter. On defense Johnson is an excellent defensive player. He has an excellent set-up to the ball and is quite graceful in the field. He clearly has a feel and some flair for defense. The ball exits Johnson's hand well and he has a pretty quick release and good accuracy. Johnson's has excellent defensive technique. He takes good angles and can cut off the ball in the gaps. Johnson is a well above average defensive player and is very good in centerfield. He is a 6.90 runner. On the mound he pitches from an over the top slot with a short arm stroke. His fastball has cut action. Johnson's curveball velocity (58) is way off the fastball (80-83). Johnson is a D1 caliber player that has thus far slipped through cracks. He can compete as a freshman for playing time, especially because of defensive ability and intriguing bat and by his sophomore year, he should be pushing for a starting spot. Look for him to be a draftable player after a college career.
