Matthew Upchurch is a 2019 LHP/OF with a 6-0 170 lb. frame from Denver, NC who attends Lincoln Charter. Large frame with long limbs and a lean, wiry build. Projects for additional strength. Primary left handed pitcher with a simple side step to medium leg lift delivery. Stays balanced on back side a gather and worked to the plate with drop and drive lower half actions. Lands in line and carries momenutm well. Compact arm circle at take back and released from a three-quarters arm slot. Fastball flashed some run back to arm side in the low 80's, topped at 84 miles per hour. Curveball showed 12/6 shape with solid spin and good depth. Flashed tight, late bit with a slider offering that sat in the low 70's. Consistently filled each quadrant of the strike zone will attacked hitters with all three pitches. Also worked out defensively from the outfield showing clean, sound footwork while closing to and working through the baseball. Fluid glove actions and pick up and maintained momentum towards target. Throws generated accurate, on line carry to the bag topping at 85 miles per hour. Left handed hitter with an upright, narrow stance and simple leg lift trigger. Created some linear shift into contact with lower half. Loose hand path to contact with a loose, linear barrel plane through extension. Primarily looked to throw barrel head to contact out front and work to the middle of the field. Very good student as well.
