2006 California Underclass
George Cardenas is a 2007 RHP/SS from Damien HS, residing in Chino Hills, CA, with a 5'11" 140 lb. frame. He has a slender build on a medium frame. On the mound Cardenas pitches from a 3/4 slot with a short arm action on the backside. He was aggressive on the mound with an approach that was like an infielder on the mound. His 79-80 FB had some sink action and he flashed a change-up. Cardenas proved able to start bats. At the plate, his lower half works and he dropped his hands into a slot that produced a sweeping swing. That swing has some length and gets his hands away from his body, providing some opposite field ability, but trouble on the inner half. On defense he showed quiet actions and decent hands. With an ok release, Cardenas showed some feel for defense. He took a real nice angle to a pop-up flare in shallow LF. His arm had some good carry on in-game throws from SS. He clearly likes to play baseball. At this point it is not determined yet if pitcher or INF is his future position. Time and strength gains are the key to sorting it out. He is a follow prospect at the small college level.
