2017 Spring Top Prospect Showcase
Stefan Stockwell is a 2018 LHP/1B, OF with a 6-2 174 lb. frame from Ankeny, IA who attends Ankeny Centennial. Medium frame with long limbs and wiry strength. Frame projects to support additional size with strength. Primary left handed pitcher with a side step to medium leg lift delivery. Stays tall on back side while creating coil over back leg at balance point. Utilizes lower half while driving to the plate with slight drop and drive actions. Tends to land at a slightly closed position creating cross fire at release, but maintains momentum to the plate through finish. Released from a three-quarters arm slot producing occasional running action to arm side with a fastball offering that topped at 72 miles per hour. Curveball had loose spin with proper shape and depth. Filled zone with curveball with developing feel to the edges. Also flashed a changeup offering in the low 60's that had occasional wiggle. Changeup flashed best deception when matching arm slot and arm speed to fastball. Also worked out defensively from first base showing smooth paced footwork while centering the baseball. Clean glove actions while picking up baseball with developing fluidity when working through exchange. Loose three-quarters arm slot at release creating soft carry to the bag. Left handed hitter with an upright, narrow stance. Works to a tall front side at contact with linear lower half actions. Loose path to contact with an uphill plane through extension. Utilized the middle of the field throughout batting practice but flashed the barrel control to work the other way as well. Tools will continue to develop with physical maturity. Good student as well.
