LATEST PG SHOWCASE REPORT
2005 South Top Prospect Showcase
Watson is a lean 5-10, 160 lb senior left handed pitcher from Texas. He turned in one of the most interesting performances at the showcase and is an interesting study in evaluating a pitcher. Watson warmed up throwing 82-83 mph from the left side with little effort and a loose, easy arm. When a batter stepped into the box, his style and approach changed completely. Watson was 80-81 mph with his fastball with a high effort delivery that included a high leg kick and some cross body recoil. The thing was that hitters couldn't follow the ball at all against Watson's delivery and mid 3/4's release point and wildly swung and missed. Watson must of induced 20 swings and misses in 3 innings, most on fastballs outside of the strike zone. His 66 mph curveball and 71 mph slider had nice rotation and bite but had the same effect on hitters as his fastball. So what's the best way for Watson to develop? With the calm approach that produces better stuff? Or with the present approach that lessens his raw stuff but might be harder to hit..and control? He shows a good mound presence with poise, confidence and knows what he is doing on the mound. He has a chance to be an excellent college lefty.
